  • The Rampage: Shortly after 1:00 p.m., Brown began walking east directly down the roadway of Memorial Drive. Witnesses filmed him firing erratically into passing traffic, striking at least a dozen cars. Two motorists, entirely unknown to the suspect, were struck inside their vehicles and suffered life-threatening injuries.

  • The Apprehension: A responding Massachusetts State Police Trooper alongside a nearby civilian—a former Marine legally licensed to carry a firearm—confronted Brown. Even as Brown fired on the police cruiser, the trooper and the civilian advanced toward him, firing their weapons and striking him multiple times in the limbs to neutralize the threat.

Brown was taken into custody at a regional intensive care unit. He faces multiple severe charges, including two counts of armed assault with intent to murder and various firearm offenses.

Long-Term Criminal Justice Oversight

The Memorial Drive shooting sparked heavy local political and legal discussions due to the suspect’s extensive criminal background. Brown had previously served time for a 2020 incident where he attempted to kill Boston police officers, pleading guilty to eight charges. He had been released on parole in May 2025, roughly one year before the Cambridge highway attack took place.
